This month, we’re excited to dive into the world of our newly joined London-based fashion artist, Natasha Joseph.
Can you tell us about your background and journey as a fashion artist? What led you to pursue a career in this field?
Natasha: Fashion has always been my favourite thing to draw. I’ve been drawing based on high fashion photography and fashion magazines since childhood. One of my art instructors was fascinated with my drawings and encouraged me to start posting my work online. I used Instagram as my portfolio and that’s when I started receiving live sketching opportunities in designer flagship stores and at PR events as well as creating custom artwork for brands and private commissions.
How would you describe your artistic style? What influences and inspirations contribute to your unique creative vision?
Natasha: I would describe my artistic style as dramatic and edgy yet playful. I love the concept of “imperfect” art and playing with distorted proportions with lots of bold colours. My drawings are inspired by a variety of muses from Jane Birkin to Madonna. I am inspired by iconic women who are strong and fashionable. Creating exaggerated features and using bold colour combinations are also used intentionally to create vivacious fashion illustrations.
Natasha's art style: Dramatic, Edgy & Playful.
How do you stay current with emerging fashion trends and styles while also maintaining your own signature aesthetic?
Natasha: I love reading fashion magazines and blogs to keep up with emerging fashion trends. It helps me to step outside my comfort zone and challenges me as an artist but still maintaining my signature aesthetic.
What is your experience working with different mediums, and how do you choose the right ones for a particular project?
Natasha: My favourite mediums are acrylic paints and colour pencils on Kraft paper. I think it adds a tangible texture and an element of surprise to my art which works well for all types of projects whether the theme is fashion, beauty or lifestyle.
Are there any specific techniques, mediums, or software that you specialize in or prefer to work with? How do these tools enhance your artistic process?
Natasha: Same as the above. My favourite mediums are acrylic paints and colour pencils. This is because they are so bold and give the illustrations an edge. They help dictate the way the drawing is going to be and add a touch of unknown to every drawing.

Can you share some examples of your previous work or projects? What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?
Natasha: I was live sketching at Fendi in London for their Christmas activation. The client wanted to provide mixed media paper to create artwork as they wanted to have this printed with their logo. However, the paper did not arrive from Paris and I had to use yellow printing paper instead as this was the only available paper in store. This was challenging as the paper was not suitable for painting and there was risk that colours would bleed. Despite this challenge, I was still able to create the colourful live portraits for guests who were thrilled by watching their sketches come to life. It was not my preferred medium of paper, but I still completed the project and achieved success.
What do you hope to achieve in your career as a fashion artist, and how do you plan to continue growing and evolving creatively in the years to come?
Natasha: I would love to work as an artist in residence for a fashion house. I would also love to showcase my artwork globally through renowned galleries and brand collaborations. Creating art that brings joy to my audience is my ultimate aspiration!
